There are brands built from strategy.
And then there are brands built from experience.
The KOATure was never meant to fit inside one category. It was built from real life, real lessons, real struggles, real growth, and real passion.
The name stands for:
King Of All Trades Using Real Experience.
But to understand the meaning behind the brand, you first have to understand the man behind it.
More Than A Business
Long before The KOATure became a lifestyle brand, Derrick Johnson was simply trying to figure life out like everybody else.
Working. Learning. Growing. Surviving.
Like many people, he went through seasons that forced him to reevaluate everything — including who he was, where he was headed, and what kind of life he truly wanted to build.
One of those turning points came during a divorce in his early 30s.
During that season of life, a friend invited him to the gun range.
What started as a casual experience quickly became something deeper.
The discipline. The focus. The responsibility. The release.
Shooting became more than a hobby. It became a passion.
But passion without knowledge can become dangerous.
After finding himself involved in a road rage situation that could have ended much differently, Derrick spent a night in jail and walked away with something unexpected: perspective.
The information he received from the arresting officer forced him to think differently about firearm ownership, responsibility, and education.
That moment changed everything.
Instead of reacting emotionally, he chose to educate himself.
That decision eventually led him to become a certified firearms instructor.
And once he gained that knowledge, he knew he could not keep it to himself.
Turning Experience Into Purpose
Derrick realized something important:
Too many people owned firearms without truly understanding them.
Many only knew how to “point and pull.”
But responsible ownership requires more than that. It requires education, awareness, discipline, and confidence.
So, he started teaching.
Not just to qualify people for licenses or certifications, but to help people feel empowered, informed, and safe.
What began as instruction became community.
And what made the classes different was the experience.
Every student received more than training. They received encouragement, confidence, and an environment designed to remove fear and build understanding.
To this day, Derrick proudly stands behind one personal standard:
“I guarantee a bullseye every class.”
More than 150 classes later, that standard still stands.
For him, the reward has never just been teaching people how to shoot.
It has been watching people walk into class nervous, uncertain, or intimidated… and leave smiling, confident, and proud of themselves.
That transformation matters to him.
Because The KOATure has never been about ego.
It has always been about growth.
The Brand Was Never Planned
As the firearms classes grew, Derrick started creating shirts and bags for his students.
At first, it was simply a way to provide something meaningful and memorable.
But there was another side of him that naturally showed up in the process:
fashion.
He has always believed that when you look good, you feel good.
So instead of creating generic merchandise, he started designing pieces he would actually wear himself — clothing that felt clean, functional, stylish, and authentic.
Over time, the designs evolved into something bigger.
What started as apparel for students slowly became a full lifestyle brand.
At the same time, another passion naturally remained connected to everything else:
photography.
Long before firearms instruction, Derrick had already spent years behind the camera.
So while teaching classes, he also documented the experience — capturing students, moments, reactions, targets, progress, and memories.
Because to him, moments matter.
Photography became another extension of the same philosophy: helping people see themselves differently.
Whether through a portrait session, a special event, a graduation, a wedding, or a firearms class, the mission remained the same:
Create an experience people can feel.
Refusing To Be Boxed In
Most people are taught to choose one thing.
Derrick never believed life worked that way.
The KOATure was built on the idea that people are allowed to evolve.
Allowed to explore.
Allowed to master multiple trades.
Allowed to become more than one version of themselves.
That is what “King Of All Trades Using Real Experience” truly means.
Not perfection.
Not pretending to know everything.
But learning through life itself.
Trying new things.
Building new skills.
Connecting with people.
Creating opportunities.
Growing through experience.
And most importantly: refusing to let fear define what is possible.
More Than Derrick’s Experience
What makes The KOATure different is that the vision extends beyond one person.
As Derrick explains:
“It’s not just about my experience. It’s about the people I connect with and their experiences as well.”
That mindset shapes the entire brand.
The KOATure is not simply about clothing, media, photography, firearms training, or entrepreneurship.
It is about community.
It is about helping others bring their visions to life.
It is about encouraging people to step outside their comfort zones and experience more out of life.
Because you never truly know what you are capable of until you try.
Built Through Real Struggle
From the outside looking in, success can appear effortless.
But people rarely see:
the long nights
the setbacks
the uncertainty
the rebuilding
the pressure
the self-doubt
the sacrifice
Derrick understands that reality well.
As a self-taught entrepreneur and high school dropout, he never allowed traditional expectations to define his future.
Instead, he chose growth.
He chose experience.
He chose to keep learning.
And through every challenge, one thing remained true:
“Anything worth having is worth working for.”
That mindset became part of the foundation of the brand itself.
The Legacy Behind The KOATure
When asked what legacy he wants The KOATure to leave behind, Derrick’s answer is simple:
Inspiration.
The courage for people to try something different. The confidence to build something for themselves. The freedom to step outside the box society places around them.
Because life is bigger than routine.
Life is about experience.
The KOATure exists to remind people that growth begins the moment you stop limiting yourself.
This Is The KOATure
This is not just fashion.
Not just photography.
Not just firearms training.
Not just content.
This is a reflection of real life, real growth, and real experience.
A brand built for people who refuse to be placed in one category.
A community built around evolution, creativity, confidence, and purpose.
A reminder that there is power in trying.
Power in learning.
Power in becoming.
This is The KOATure.
